La semaine passée a été marquée par de nouvelles lumières, pour moi. Et par des ombres, aussi. Des doutes. Des inquiétudes. Comment faire ? Où aller pour poursuivre l’aventure que je voudrais, pour continuer à danser ?
Mercredi soir, je me suis mise à improviser dans la pénombre et sous les lampes du studio, en utilisant mes affinités avec le sol et les qualités de mouvements qui me venaient spontanément. Une façon de redécouvrir qui je suis, comment je me sens et quelle est ma façon de danser.
Puis, jeudi et vendredi après-midi, nous avons suivi un cours d’éclairages de scène. La première partie, assez théorique, s’est déroulée à notre Fabrique d’Art, dans un mélange d’anglais et d’italien adapté à mon multilinguisme en devenir. Et le lendemain, nous avons eu droit à de plus amples explications et à des démonstrations pratiques sur la scène de l’espace TPO, pas loin du centre de Bologne. Après ces heures passées à observer différents types de projecteurs, de gels de couleurs et de vidéos, j’étais bien contente de retrouver la lumière du soleil. La scène a des merveilles, c’est sûr. Mais la nature peut parfois les surpasser en toute simplicité.

Monday 15th – Friday 19th February 2016
The past week has been marked by new lights for me. And by some shadows, too. Doubts. Worries. How can I do this? Where should I go to carry on with the adventure, to keep on dancing?
On Wednesday night, I started improvising in the dark and under the studio’s lamps, using my affinities with the floor and the movement qualities that came to me spontaneously. This gave me a chance to rediscover who I am, how I felt in that moment, and to explore my own way of dancing.
Then, on Thursday and Friday afternoon, we had a course of stage lighting. The first part of it, which was mostly theoretical, happened at the Art Factory. It was taught in a mixture of English and Italian that was pretty well suited for my multilingualism in progress. On the next day, we got more explanations and practical demonstrations on the stage of TPO – a social and cultural centre near the city centre of Bologna. After these hours spent observing different types of lights, coloured gels and videos, I was really happy to see the daylight again on my walk home. The stage has its wonders, for sure. But nature can sometimes surpass those quite simply.
If I haven’t written any article this week, it’s because it has been a very busy one.
First, Mattia announced us that the whole of our group would be involved in P-Work – a collaborative project he devised with the aim of combining dance and technology. We thus received an updated, busier rehearsal schedule for the next 2 months, including a new show! P-Work will be performed on Friday 15th April, here in Bologna. Save the date 🙂
On Tuesday, a cameraman came to the studio and filmed all 4 sections of Mattia’s choreography in order to make a trailer for his piece. I wouldn’t say it was stressful, but there was kind of a tension in the air. We had to repeat each section 3 times, to make sure the recordings would be good. And when we finally had lunch, it was almost 3pm!

In our contemporary dance classes, we started working with Gioia again. She had been away performing for the past 2 weeks, so we had to dive into her work again and regain the movement qualities that she uses. Meanwhile, we kept working on our Floorwork and partnering skills with Antonella, and tried some blind improvisations in Lara’s class.
On Friday, I had an important meeting with the staff to discuss what I would like to do after this course. Basically, I would like to earn a living by dancing and performing. But I realized that it might be too early for me to work in a company. So I said I could develop my own projects and keep taking classes to grow more mature as a dancer. We also talked about my interest in teaching dance, and the teacher training courses that I could undertake next year, as I have been thinking I should get qualified for it. They all thought I have the skills to become a very good teacher, and were happy to hear that I’m realistic as to where I’m at now.
Finally, we spent the weekend at the Art Factory for an intensive workshop with Blenard Azizaj. This guest teacher, originally from Albania, is now based in Berlin. His way of moving is very fast and almost wild, which made us all sweat A LOT. Using images and improvisation tasks, he taught us how to stay soft even in sharp movements, and how to attack from a strong centre without getting exhausted. We also put together a short piece of choreography, and had it recorded at the end of the second day. A crazy burst of energy to finish out the week.

Si je n’ai pas écrit d’article cette semaine, c’est parce qu’elle a été très chargée.
Tout d’abord, Mattia nous a annoncé que tout notre groupe allait participer à P-Work – un projet collaboratif qu’il a conçu dans le but de combiner danse et technologie. On a donc reçu un nouvel horaire de répétitions pour les 2 prochains mois, plus chargé que le précédent, et comprenant un nouveau spectacle ! P-Work sera présenté le vendredi 15 avril, ici à Bologne. Notez la date 🙂
Mardi, un caméraman est venu dans le studio et a filmé les 4 sections de la chorégraphie de Mattia pour faire une bande-annonce de la pièce. Je ne dirais pas que c’était stressant, mais il y avait comme de l’électricité dans l’air. On a dû répéter chaque section 3 fois, pour être sûrs que l’enregistrement soit bon. Et quand on a finalement pris notre pause de midi, il était presque 15h !
A nos cours de danse contemporaine, on a recommencé à travailler avec Gioia. Comme elle était partie en représentation pendant 2 semaines, il a fallu qu’on se replonge dans son travail et qu’on retrouve les qualités de mouvements qu’elle utilise. Dans le même temps, on a continué à affiner notre technique de Floorwork et partnering avec Antonella, et essayé quelques improvisations à l’aveuglette pendant le cours de Lara.
Vendredi, j’ai eu un meeting important avec l’équipe pour discuter de ce que je voudrais faire après cette formation. Essentiellement, je voudrais gagner ma vie en dansant et en montant sur scène. Mais j’ai réalisé que pour moi, il est sans doute trop tôt pour travailler dans une compagnie. Donc j’ai dit que je pourrais développer mes propres projets et continuer à prendre des cours pour mûrir comme danseuse. On a aussi parlé de mon intérêt pour l’enseignement de la danse, et de formations pour devenir professeur de danse que je pourrais potentiellement entreprendre l’année prochaine, vu que je me suis dit que je devrais obtenir des qualifications à ce niveau-là. Ils pensaient tous que j’ai les compétences pour devenir une très bonne prof de danse, et étaient contents d’entendre que je suis réaliste dans ma vision d’où j’en suis maintenant.
Workshop with Blenard Azizaj. Leggere Strutture Art Factory, 13-14/02/2016
Finalement, on a passé le week-end à la Fabrique d’Art pour un workshop intensif avec Blenard Azizaj. Ce professeur invité, originaire d’Albanie, est maintenant basé à Berlin. Sa façon de bouger est très rapide et presque sauvage, ce qui nous a fait BEAUCOUP transpirer. En utilisant des images et des consignes d’improvisations, il nous a appris à rester doux même dans les mouvements incisifs, et à attaquer ceux-là en partant d’un centre fort, sans s’épuiser. On a aussi assemblé une petite chorégraphie, et on l’a filmée à la fin de la deuxième journée. Un fol éclat d’énergie pour conclure la semaine.

Nous voici exactement à la moitié de notre programme d’entrainement à Leggere Strutture. Pour marquer ce cap, aujourd’hui, j’ai écrit sur la dernière page du cahier que j’avais entamé au début de ce cours. Et j’en ai acheté un nouveau, qui sera mon journal de danse pour les 4 mois à venir.
Mon ancien cahier de notes de Dance’s Start Up, son 2ème volume à peine entamé, et notre horaire pour la 1ère semaine de février.
En ce moment, la plupart d’entre nous sont occupés à planifier les auditions à passer pour continuer dans la danse. Je me renseigne aussi petit à petit, tout en restant concentrée sur nos projets du moment. Mattia, notre directeur artistique, compose une nouvelle pièce avec nous. On y a travaillé pendant 2 heures chaque jour cette semaine-ci, et ce processus va continuer la semaine prochaine. En plus d’une chorégraphie que nous dansons à l’unisson puis deux par deux, j’apprends un duo avec Justine, et je compose aussi un solo avec pour directive d’aller “en marche arrière“. Un challenge !

So here we are: exactly halfway through our training programme at Leggere Strutture. Today, just to mark the occasion, I wrote on the last page of the notebook I had started at the beginning of this course. And I bought a new one, which will be my dance diary for the next 4 months.
At the moment, most of us are busy planing for auditions to take in order to continue in the dance world. Little by little, I’m also doing my research, while staying focused on the current projects that we have. Mattia, our artistic director, is creating a new piece with us. We worked on it for 2 hours every day this week, and this process is going to continue next week. Together with a choreography that we dance in unison and then in pairs, I’m learning a duet with Justine, and I’m also composing a solo with the guideline of going in reverse – quite a challenge!
Depuis la reprise de Dance’s Start Up, je me suis remise à faire une vidéo hedbomadaire, sorte de mémo-mouvement du travail en cours. La nouveauté de l’année, c’est que je vais inviter les autres danseurs du groupe à danser avec moi, pour vous montrer leur style, leurs talents, et le travail qu’on fait ensemble dans le studio. Parce que la danse va bien plus loin que l’art du solo !
Voici donc une vidéo réalisée avec ma première invitée : April, qui vient de Slovénie. April est une partenaire brillante en improvisation, et une danseuse dont l’énergie et la fluidité de mouvement se révèlent magnifiquement en Floorwork. Le solo qui apparait dans cette vidéo, elle l’a créé elle-même au cours de notre laboratoire chorégraphique.

Since we are back in Dance’s Start Up, I have started making a weekly video again, as sort of a moving memo of the work in progress. New this year, I’m going to invite the other dancers of the group to do this with me, so that I can show you their style, their skills and the work we do together in the studio. Because dancing goes way beyond soloing!
So here is a video I made with my first guest: April, who comes from Slovenia. April is a brilliant partner in improvisation. Besides, her energy and movement fluidity show themselves wonderfully in Floorwork. She choreographed the solo that appears in this video herself, as part of our choreographic lab.
